Slide Shows from Annual Meeting Now Available

About 80 people attended MBCA’s 55th Annual Meeting on February 3, 2024. Ten presentations covered topics focused on “Keeping It Local” and also addressing wider issues of desert preservation and government regulation.

Here is the Annual Meeting program, and below are brief summaries and links to PowerPoint presentations where available for each topic.


MBCA Educational Support – Janet Johnston provided an overview of MBCA’s scholarship and 8th grade field trip programs.

National Parks Conservation Association – Luke Basulto illustrated details about the benefits and status of the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument and expansion of Joshua Tree National Park.

California 30x30 and Desert Carbon Sequestration – Susy Boyd of Mojave Desert Land Trust demonstrated why the undisturbed desert should be left intact to help deal with climate change.

NEM 3.0 / BLM solar the West – Steve Bardwell outlined the latest challenges to rooftop solar and describes several new utility scale solar projects in the West.

AB 205 – Frazier Haney of California Desert Coalition and The Wildlands Conservancy described the ongoing issues of land development for renewable energy in California.

Light Trespass Ordinance – Steve Bardwell provided an overview of the new San Bernardino County ordinance and demonstrated the effects of shielded lighting and different string lights in the darkened room.

Desert Wise Living Landscape Tour – MBCA Board member and Tour Committee Chair Stacy Doolittle provided a preview of the 2024 Desert Wise Landscape Tour (Sunday, April 21, 2024).

Development in the Basin – Justin Merino of Save Our Deserts reviewed the status of several resort-type developments and the difficulty of defining “campgrounds” in the County planning process.

Housing/STRs – Janet Johnston updated the status of several aspects of the ongoing rental housing crisis in the Morongo Basin.

State of our Water in the Basin – Marina West of Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency and the Mojave Water Agency Board demonstrated the status of water availability across the region.
